As someone that has been involved with tennis for over 17 years, I’m reminded every day what a wonderful sport this is for kids,   Aside from the obvious athletic and health impact, the emotional and mental affect is great.  It builds confidence, teaches work ethic, and encourages sportsmanship.  The most important thing for me is to make sure that the child enjoys it.  Teaching fundamentals might not sound like the most ‘fun,’ but that breeds success, and that is a lot of fun.”

Gear Guidelines

Tennis gear may seem pretty straightforward, but putting some thought into the rackets, shoes and socks you use can go a long way toward preventing injuries.

Here are a few basic guidelines to follow when choosing equipment:

  • Rackets. Using a racket that is too light or too heavy can increase your risk of shoulder and elbow injuries. Likewise, a racket with the wrong grip size or the wrong amount of tension in the strings can be hard on your wrists and arms. Consult your tennis coach to make sure you get a racket that is appropriate for your size and skill level.

  • Sneakers. Be sure to get shoes that are specifically designed for tennis and the court surface. Tennis shoes should support your heel and help keep your ankle from rolling, and decrease side-to-side sliding, which can take a toll on your ankles and feet

  • Socks. Choose socks made from synthetic fabrics rather than cotton, as these will help keep your feet dry and prevent blisters. For added support, you might want to consider wearing two pairs of socks or specially padded tennis socks.

Proper stretching, strengthening, and warm-up help prevent common overuse injuries.

The goal of tot tennis lessons is to create a fun tennis environment where children can have great time while developing their hand-eye coordination. The average attention span for a child at the age of 4-5 ranges anywhere from 10-15 minutes. Therefore by keeping their full attention with a fun filled experience, the hope is that they will enjoy themselves while learning the basic skills of tennis and as a result, develop a genuine love for the game.
